A founder I know called me last week. He runs a studio not unlike ours. But this wasn't about a project. It was a gut check.

"Karan, I'm at a crossroads. Half my pipeline vanished. Founders are spinning up working versions themselves in days. The ones still reaching out want production systems, not prototypes. I don't know what we are anymore."

I didn't have a clean answer. Because I've been sitting with the same question.

The floor fell out

For a decade, the playbook was simple.

Founder has idea → Founder hires studio → Studio builds MVP in 8-12 weeks → Founder raises → Studio builds v2.

That playbook is breaking.

A year ago, 25% of YC's W25 batch had codebases that were 95% AI-generated. That felt like a signal. Then the W26 numbers came in last month:

14 companies hit $1M ARR by Demo Day (vs. the historical 2-3%).

Hex Security got there in eight weeks. Luel approached $2M in six. Traditional timeline for that milestone: 12-18 months.

But look at what's actually winning. 60% of W26 is AI-powered, with the sharpest deep-tech tilt in YC history. These aren't vibe-coded prototypes. They're AI-native companies with real revenue, building infrastructure and vertical agents. The ones winning used AI to compress the timeline from idea to revenue, not to skip engineering.

The MVP as we've known it is dead. But that sentence needs a second half.

What's growing in the wreckage

Those same vibe-coded apps are starting to break. And not quietly.

Georgia Tech's Vibe Security Radar tracked 35 CVEs in a single month (March 2026) directly tied to AI coding tools. The estimated true count is 5-10x higher. Veracode found 45% of AI-generated code introduces OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities. Not theoretical. Exploitable.

The dev community backlash has been loud. Some of it earned.

But most of it misses the point.

Vibe coding isn't the problem. The confusion is.

Vibe coding isn't bad engineering. It isn't engineering at all. It's prototyping. The fastest way anyone has ever had to test whether an idea has legs. Dismissing it because it produces fragile code is like dismissing napkin sketches because they're not load-bearing blueprints.

The problem is the gap between what the tools produce and what founders believe they have. When a prototype built in a few days has a polished UI and a smooth demo flow, it's natural to believe it's a product.

Then someone tries to pay. Or a security researcher spends 20 minutes with it. Or users go from 10 to 10,000. And it comes apart. Because the architecture decisions were made by a model that optimized for "runs," not "runs reliably."

I wrote about this in my last issue. Vibe coding is Level 1 on the agentic engineering spectrum. A valid starting point. The gap between Level 1 and Level 3-plus is where most products go to die.

YC's own arc tells the story. W25 celebrated speed. 95% AI-generated codebases, fastest batch ever. W26 celebrated substance. Real infrastructure, real revenue, real problems solved. Garry Tan questioned whether AI-generated codebases could scale to 100M users without "falling over." Even the people who championed the revolution refined what they meant by it.

What the MVP actually became

The MVP didn't die. It split.

The prototype is now free. Any founder with an idea and an AI tool can get here. Studios still pricing this at five or six figures are heading for a rough year.

The production system is harder to build than before. When AI writes the first draft, nobody fully understands the codebase. Assumptions live in prompts nobody saved. Architecture decisions were never consciously made. They were implied by whatever the model generated first.

My friend at the crossroads isn't losing a market. He's watching it restructure. Founders don't need someone to build v1 anymore. They need someone who can take what they built and make it hold up when it matters.

Three questions if you're building on a vibe-coded v1

If you built your first version with AI, good. You validated faster and cheaper than any generation of founders before you.

Now sit with these.

Could a security researcher break in within an hour?
Based on current data, almost certainly. If you handle user data or payments, this isn't a someday problem.

If your user base 10x'd next month, what breaks first?
Not "the app might slow down." Which queries, which endpoints, which infrastructure assumptions collapse? If the answer is "I'm not sure," that's the gap.

When something fails at 2 AM, can anyone on your team actually diagnose it?
Not prompt an AI to guess. Read the code. Trace the error. If nobody can, you don't have a product. You have a demo with users.

None of these should make you panic. They should make you plan.

What I told my friend

When most of the code is AI-generated, the value isn't in writing it. It's in the layer around it. The specs that define "done" before anyone touches a keyboard. The architecture that holds at 100 users or 100,000. The verification that catches what models miss.

The best time to be a studio that knows how to build production software is right now. Not despite the shift, because of it. Look at W26: the companies hitting $1M ARR in weeks built AI-native systems with real architecture underneath, not vibe-coded prototypes. The world got flooded with products that need to grow up. The founders behind them know it.

The bar didn't disappear. It moved up.
